Naive Creativity

Inspired by my two young sisters, I set out on this project with the idea of exploring the world through a child's eyes. Children do not know how to stifle their creativity, they are unabashed in their view of the world. Anything is a possibility. What if bubbles in your bath were made of cotton candy? How creepy would it be if eggs turned out to be eyeballs? Why not float away into the sky on a hot air balloon made of peonies?

With this project, I wanted to maintain a minimalist feel to emphasize a child's limited view of the world. In photography, the goal is typically to use light and shadows to show three dimensions with a two-dimensional art form. I kept lighting with this project super simple and used it to emphasize the two-dimensionality of photography to reflect a child's limited view of the world.

Throughout this project I found myself struggling to turn off the idea that my work needed to be commercial or clean or even required complex lighting setups. It pushed me so far out of my comfort zone and challenged my ideas about what photography as an art form is. I found a new sense of creativity through this project, a happy result of one of my all-time favorite projects.
